The road along the valley of Dolo in the municipality of Frassinoro (province of Modena) was frequently interrupted by a landslide in slow motion on the north eastern side of Mount Modino. The landslide caused the interruption of the road which is the only link between some cities of the mountain and the valley where is located the most part of the services.
The solution adopted to secure and permanently restore the road connection is to overpass the landslide with a 160 m bridge in a single span light.
Piacentini Ingegneri drafted the Final Project, Executive Project and the Safety and Coordination Plan. It was also in charge of construction
management and safety coordination during the construction work. The bridge is arched with a deck suspended with oblique rods scheme
(according to the Nielsen diagram) with 160.00 m span. The slab is made of precast concrete shells and connected by castings curbs and
partially prestressed with post-tensioned cables.
The main difficulty of the project is due to the impossibility of achieving temporary supports on the bed of the landslide for the assembly of the
structure. It has therefore opted for the full metal assembly of the deck in a safe area at about 350 m from the landslide, then the transport to the
fully assembled structure, on the substructures.
The metal structure, of the total weight of approximately 850 tons, was then transported along a path of 350m with maximum longitudinal gradient
of 5% using modular motorized trailers in the synchronous movement of 255 ton of total weight.
